About
Actigraphy for Sleep, Chronobiology and Physical Activity
The MotionWatch 8 is the next generation of medical-grade actigraphy for the monitoring of sleep, circadian rhythm and physical activity. One of the smallest and lightest on the market, the MotionWatch can be utilised for studies with paediatric, adult, and elderly patients.
The device is supported by MotionWare Software, which allows for the set-up, download and analysis of data captured with the MotionWatch 8. The software provides device management tools such as battery monitoring, data management, flexible report generation, and bulk text export, and is available for Windows and Mac OS.
Data is collected via the MotionWatch 8, and uploaded to the MotionWare software for analysis of Sleep, Circadian Rhythm, Physical Activity and Ambient light data. With a long life battery, the device is incredibly low burden for both patients and researchers, eliminating the need for frequent charging.

The MotionWatch 8 is a versatile device that can be used in a clinical or research setting for:
- MotionWare Sleep Analysis: The device’s advanced Sleep Analysis function provides valuable insights into sleep parameters, such as efficiency and fragmentation. The device’s unobtrusive nature ensures a true reflection of the subject’s behaviour in their home environment.
- Circadian Rhythm Analysis: The MotionWatch is ideal for examining circadian stability and chronobiology through its ability to obtain long-term recordings with high patient compliance. The device also incorporates an in-built light sensor to monitor light exposure and uses Non-Parametric Circadian Rhythm Analysis (NPCRA) to quantify circadian stability. The MotionWatch is useful for examining circadian stability and chronobiology, thanks to long-term recordings with high patient compliance.
- Physical Activity Analysis: The device’s Physical Activity Analysis function records daytime physical activity and reports on sedentary behaviour and levels of Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA). The MotionWare software provides in-built tools for the classification, quantification, and reporting of MVPA from actigraphy data.
Actigraphy Data
The MotionWare software provides a multiple-day, single or double plotted motion graph within a flexible, scalable and scrollable window. The Motionware window is the key tool for the selection of data for more detailed analysis providing a method.
Detailed View of Graph
For each day containing data a graph is displayed which contains detailed information on activity, marked events and light (if enabled). The black activity bars are the epoch based activity counts that provide a detailed insight into the behaviour of the suvject over time. The yellow ambient light data provide a valuable additional channel for determining lights out / light on and for light exposure in chronobiological studies. The marker button on the MotionWatch 8 allows the subject to mark bed time / get-up time and these data are included in the graph as blue lines.
