Simeox provides effective and comfortable airway clearance for patients suffering from chronic lung diseases such as:

  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • COPD
  • Viscous and thick mucus, for whom the mucociliary process is impaired.

Developed by PhysioAssist, Simeox offers healthcare professionals a non-invasive solution that changes the viscosity of the mucus, allowing it to be expectorated through a natural cough. Using normal tidal breathing, the patient exhales through the mouthpiece while Simeox delivers a succession of pneumatic vibratory signals throughout the bronchial tree. This liquifies the mucus and shifts it to a higher bronchial tree where it can be expectorated.

Unlike other airway clearance aids, such as IPPV or Mechanical In-Exsufflation, SIMEOX does not deliver any continuous flow, reducing the risk of bronchial collapse. The patient remains passive throughout the therapy providing fatigue-free session.

Simeox should only be used under the supervision or recommendation of an experienced medical professional specialising in respiratory care. After having been trained by a healthcare professional, Simeox can be used at home by the patient themselves as part of their treatment plan with their healthcare team.

FAQs

What is Simeox?

Simeox is a class 2a medical device that delivers a specific pneumatic signal* during the exhalation phase that liquefies bronchial mucus while transporting it from the distal part of the lung to the central airways. Simeox helps patients with pulmonary diseases suffering from abundant and sticky mucus to mobilize and drain their secretions. The patient uses Simeox in total relaxation, therefore his fatigability is not increased.

*This signal has been designed based on 4 years of fundamental research about the bronchial mucus properties and has a direct impact on the viscosity of mucus.

Can I use Simeox on neuromuscular patients?

Simeox assists the exhalation phase, not the inspiration phase. The patient needs to be able to inspire by themself. Therefore, by design, patients with muscular weakness cannot effectively use Simeox.

What is the age/weight limit for using Simeox?

The age limit is 8 years-old. There is no weight limit.

What are the main benefits of using Simeox?

Simeox allows distal drainage of sticky mucus by liquefying bronchial secretions with no increase of the patient fatigability. By deflating the lungs, it helps to restore thoracic compliance.

Is there a risk that liquefied mucus falls at the bottom of the patient’s lungs?

No. Fundamental research supporting the design of the Simeox technology has shown that when bronchial mucus stimulation stops, it goes back to its initial sticky status. This is why Simeox signal liquefies mucus and transports it at the same time.

What type of settings do I need to adjust?

There are very few settings to adjust when using Simeox:

  • Number of exhalations (6, 8 or 10)
  • Intensity of signal power (25%, 50%, 75% or 100%).
Can we use generic tubing?

No. Specific accessories (tubing, filter and mouthpiece) are to be used in combination with Simeox.
The design of the filter is very specific and allows an acceleration of the propagation of the signal which contributes to the efficacy of the device.

Does Simeox collect pattern of usage data?

Currently, Simeox does not collect any therapy data.
