The PEPE device is a vibratory PEP is a single patient use therapy device that provides Positive Expiratory Pressure (PEP) therapy for patients who have Cystic Fibrosis, COPD, asthma, and lung diseases with secretory problems, and patients with atelectasis. The PEP device uses inhalation and exhalation to keep the lungs healthy. When exhaling, the PEP vibratory therapy device provides vibrations you will feel in the airways.
Over-the-counter medication simply relaxes the muscles and relieves inflammation, it does not clear the build-up of mucus in the airways. The accumulation of mucus in the lungs causes a decline in lung capacity. The PEPE device (Positive Expiratory Pressure Exerciser or vibratory PEP device’s vibratory flutter effectively clears mucus from the airways and strengthens the lungs. The PEPE device can also be used as a lung exerciser that is suitable for athletes as well as physically active people to increase their lung capacity. The PEPE device opens weak or collapsed airways by creating positive pressure and oscillations simultaneously, which helps move secretions such as mucus to the upper airways where it can be coughed out.
The PEPE device is designed to be an add-on therapy to your existing medications. You should continue to take your prescribed medications.
IMMEDIATE BENEFIT: It will open up the airways into your lungs that have been partially obstructed over the years, due to natural aging, pollution, poor physical condition, and smoking (if applicable).
LONG TERM BENEFIT: It will target and develop the respiratory muscles (the diaphragm and intercostals) to help you inhale more volume of air/oxygen into your lungs, and to exhale more carbon dioxide out of your lungs.
What can the PEPE Airway Clearance Device be used for?
The PEPE (Positive Expiratory Pressure Exerciser) device can be used as a natural and effective PEP therapy treatment for patients suffering from respiratory conditions such as:
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Asthma treatment (with Secretion Retention)
- Bronchiectasis
- COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
- Smokers
- Most other disorders resulting in retained secretions
- Lung strengthening and expansion
- Chest cold and flu
- Mucociliary Clearance Disorders
Stage 1 – Mucus Loosening and Mucus Mobilization
- Gather supplies, relax, assume proper posture and position.
- Slowly inhale beyond a normal breath, but do not fill lungs completely.
- Hold breath for 2–3 seconds
- Place PEPE in mouth, adjust tilt to feel maximum of vibrations within chest, keep cheeks stiff.
- Exhale through PEPE at a reasonably fast but not too forceful speed, using abdominal breathing.
- Exhale beyond a normal breath but do not empty lungs completely.
- Attempt to suppress cough.
- Repeat steps 1 through 7 for 5–10 breaths.
Begin Stage 2 – Mucus Elimination
- Slowly inhale, filling lungs completely.
- Hold breathe for 2–3 seconds.
- Place PEPE in mouth, adjust tilt to feel maximum vibrations within chest, keep cheeks stiff.
- Exhale forcefully through PEPE as completely as possible.
- Repeat steps 9 through 12 for 1–2 breaths.
- Initiate cough (or huff manoeuvre). Return to Stage 1 and repeat full sequence (Stages 1 and 2) until lungs are clear or therapy is over.
*Note: Feeling light-headed is normal, but be careful not to push too far.
